Mission and Outreach

Skipwith UMC is driven by missions!
Our members and friends are involved in local, national,
and international mission opportunities.

Skipwith UMC is involved in our community in many ways.  The Winter Carnival, which was held on January 27th, was a successful event which drew many members of our community into our church, and gave those of us who participated opportunities to connect with a
variety of folks.  Many thanks to those who helped by donating supplies, with set-up, volunteering, and clean-up for this very popular event!
Other ongoing outreach into the community, focused specifically on our neighbors at Skipwith Elementary, includes volunteers who read weekly to the children, bi-monthly treats for the teachers and staff, and the Backpack Ministry.

Our mission as United Methodists is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  Connecting with our community is a first step in this process.  Be sure you’re involved in one or more of these ministries to help Skipwith UMC participate in God’s purpose!

The houses we worked on were damaged by the heavy flood waters brought on by Hurricane Matthew last October (2016).  Many homeowners are still living with other family members or in motels a full year later.  The target date for returning to the houses we worked on is this Thanksgiving.

We put our hands and hearts to sheet rock finishing, painting walls and trim, spay-painting doors, removing old and installing new crawl-space vents, cleaning up appliances, and even some yardwork!  Team members nurtured an attitude of self-sacrifice and a mind set of “no task too menial.”

Our Skipwith church family’s generous donations, words of encouragement and daily prayers were vital to the Team’s effectiveness.  We were even blessed by the diligent, intercessory prayers of a few anonymous prayer “warriors”…you know who you are!
Each summer, we collect school supplies for the students and teacher of Skipwith Elementary School, our next-door neighbor.
Six members of our church family including Pastor Todd as the "Cat in the Hat", kicked off our renewed and expanded Reading Program with our friends at Skipwith Elementary School on Thursday, March 2, 2017.  We have 8 volunteer readers and classroom helpers, 1 math tutor, a library volunteer...and a drama coach or 2 in the works.
There are lots of kids, teachers and workers to embrace with the love of Christ.  Come along and help us do this.
Oh The Places You'll Go!!

SUMC raises money for RISE AGAINST HUNGER, an international hunger relief agency.  Then, we use these funds to pay for the supplies that we use to package 12,500 meals for hungry children.  Skipwith UMC joined with Skipwith Elementary on May 4 to package the meals that will be used as a tool to change lives by promoting education, improving student's health and nutrition, addressing gender inequalities, stimulating economic growth and fighting child labor.

We are excited about the outreach ministry here at Skipwith!  Every week we deliver to Skipwith Elementary School, backpacks filled with enough food for 35 children through the weekend.
Donations of food can be made to the church as well as cash contributions. Click on the backpack to see the needed items.

Utila, Honduras

Skipwith's largest international mission is its partnership
with the Methodist school on the island of Utila in Honduras.
Our congregation provides financial support to keep the
school open each year and pay its teachers.
